Gorongosa National Park is located in central Mozambique, near the southern end of the Great Rift Valley. The park includes a mix of savannas, forests, wetlands, and grasslands, creating habitats for a wide variety of wildlife.
After suffering significant losses during Mozambique's civil war, Gorongosa's wildlife populations have made a remarkable recovery. Today, visitors can encounter lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, monkeys, hippos, and crocodiles across the reserve.
Elephants are among the most frequently sighted animals, while buffalo are seen less often. The floodplains support large numbers of waterbuck, and other antelope species include sable, impala, nyala, bushbuck, reedbuck, and oribi.
Warthogs and baboons are also common, particularly around camps and picnic areas. Hippos and crocodiles are typically found in rivers, lakes, and other permanent water sources.
Gorongosa National Park is home to around 400 bird species. On any single day, visitors may see over 150 of them, including the plum thrush, green coucal, and spotted creeper. Bird watchers often visit Gorongosa Mountain to see special birds that live only in this area, including the green-headed oriole.
Note: For safety reasons, self-driving is not allowed in the park.
Travellers can visit the national park at any time of the year. The dry season, from May to October, is the best period to see wildlife, as animals gather near rivers and other permanent water sources. Thinner vegetation during this time makes spotting animals easier.

Explore Gorongosa National Park on a guided game drive. Visitors may see antelope, monkeys, birds, and, with some luck, larger animals such as lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, and crocodiles. The drives pass through a range of habitats, including floodplains and forests.
Join a guided bush walk to experience Gorongosa at a slower pace. Along the way, you can learn about local plants, spot signs of wildlife, and follow animal tracks through the bush.
Lake Urema is home to crocodiles, hippos, and a variety of waterbirds. A boat safari provides access to this wetland area in Gorongosa.
Explore Mount Gorongosa with a drive up the mountain, visit local farmers at the Gorongosa Coffee Project, and hike to a waterfall with clear pools. The day ends with a picnic by one of the rainforest streams.
Pangolins are among the world’s most trafficked mammals. Rangers rescue pangolins from poachers and traffickers and return them to the wild. Visits are subject to availability.
Chicari Camp offers spacious solar-powered tented suites in a remote part of the park. Guests can enjoy guided game drives and walking safaris, while a nearby waterhole attracts wildlife throughout the dry season.
Muzimu Lodge features elevated canvas suites and guided morning and evening game drives, offering excellent opportunities to experience Gorongosa's wildlife.
